Children's Oral Health Initiative (COHI)

The Children’s Oral Health Initiative is a Health Canada initiative designed to prevent and control tooth decay and other oral diseases in young First Nations and Inuit Children.

COHI targets:

  • Pregnant women
  • Preschool children ages 0-4 and their caregivers
  • School children ages 5-7

COHI services:

  • Dental screenings (assessment and referral as needed)
  • Fluoride varnish applications
  • Sealants
  • Oral health information sessions with parents/caregiversGenerations Smiles


First Nations Communities to be serviced:

  • Constance Lake
  • Taykwa Tagamou
  • Mattagami
  • Matachewan
  • Chapleau Ojibway
  • Brunswick House
  • Chapleau Cree
  • Whagoshig

These First Nation Communities will be visited 4 times a year for COHI services by staff from the Porcupine Health Unit.
