Your Growing Child

It’s been a few weeks, a few months or maybe even a few years since your baby was born.  He has grown so much! It’s amazing to watch him explore his world – it seems he is learning something new everyday! He even has his own little personality.  Your child maybe easy to care for … she listens quite well, sleeps her night and is generally a happy person.  Or maybe your child needs a little more attention ... she wakes often at night,  has temper tantrums, bites or hits when she is upset or is not easily comforted.

Each child is different

Parents tend to compare their children to other children. Comparing your child to another can either reassure you that he is doing well or may worry you because he is not doing as much as other children his age.

Growing Healthy Families

We can provide you with information about growth and development so that you will know how well your child is growing.  The public health nurse can help you complete an age-appropriate checklist called a Nipissing Developmental Screening Tool to make sure he is meeting his developmental milestones.  She can connect you with community services if you have concerns about your child’s development.  She can also give you information to encourage your child’s healthy growth and development and to keep him safe.

A Checklist for Parents

The Nipissing Developmental Screening Tool was developed for parents.  It encourages you to take time every couple of months to watch your child and to talk to your doctor, your nurse practitioner or public health nurse if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s development or well-being.

Check your issue of Let’s Grow for a copy of an age-appropriate Nipissing Developmental Screening Tool or contact your local Porcupine Health Unit office to obtain a free copy!

You can also register your child to receive age-appropriate Nipissing Developmental Screening Tools via e-mail. Visit eNDDS.ca to register.
