mother holding babyBreastfeeding - the healthiest choice

Breastmilk has many proven benefits for both mom and baby and is more than just the best nutrition for baby.  It is also a way for a mother and baby to bond and begin a wonderful, close relationship.  Fathers also have a special role to play in supporting this experience.

Breastmilk is the perfect food for baby and cannot be duplicated by formula.  Breastmilk is easily digested and meets the changing needs of a growing baby.    It also helps to boost baby’s immune system and contains disease fighting agents which help to keep your baby healthy. Breastmilk is all your baby needs for the first six months. Even after solid foods are introduced, your baby benefits from continued breastfeeding for up to two years of age and beyond.

While breastfeeding is normal and natural, breastfeeding is a learned skill. Trust your body. Take the time to learn.  And . . . when challenges arise, get skilled breastfeeding help early. Breastfeeding problems can be fixed!

Be sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about how you will feed your baby. Once you have made your infant feeding choice, call the Porcupine Health Unit to find out more about getting breastfeeding off to a good start or feeding your baby infant formula safely.
