Genetic Clinics
Genetic clinics are held, in the Cochrane District, four times a year with two attending geneticists from Southern Ontario. This allows us to serve approximately 100 families per year. Individuals and families with a wide range of concerns are seen and counseled regarding the genetic condition found in their family. This includes diagnosis, treatment options and addressing any questions or concerns from individuals or families.
Following a genetic assessment, referrals can be made to other specialties, service providers or agencies.
Occasionally there is a need for genetic services on an urgent basis and in this instance our advisor, Dr. Wendy Meschino will provide services via videoconference and follow up with the client as appropriate. If our advisor is unavailable, we have the option of contacting any one of a number of other geneticists who work with one or more of the five northern sites.
There are at present two genetic nurse counselors at the Porcupine Health Unit, both of whom can provide genetic information to the public, agencies or health care providers.
Genetic clinics are held regularly, but require an appointment. Please call the Porcupine Health Unit Genetic Program at (705) 267–1181 or
1 (877) 442–1212 or complete the attached referral form and fax or mail it to us.
