Needle Stick Injuries

The Porcupine Health Unit, often receives requests from the community regarding the handling and safe disposal of discarded needles. Any discarded needles may pose a serious health risk and should be handled with caution. People may find discarded needles and syringes in different places. The Porcupine Health Unit has received reports of used needles in hotels/motels, campgrounds, apartment buildings, roadways and office buildings. These needles may pose a health risk because they may be contaminated with diseases like HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, etc.

Accidental exposure to a contaminated needle can cause serious illness. It is advised that any discarded needles are considered a serious health risk and handled safely. If you find discarded needles, do not handle them with bare hands. Use a shovel, tongs or such other device to minimize direct contact. The needle should then be disposed of in a puncture proof container. Should anyone accidentally get pricked by a discarded needle he or she should consult his/her family physician or hospital.
