Food Safety Training Certification Course
"Every year, an estimated 11 to 13 million Canadians suffer from illnesses caused by food-borne illness." Food safety is important to everyone; however, vulnerable populations such as seniors, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk of food-borne illness. (Health Canada)
The most effective method for preventing food-borne illnesses is food handler education. Did you know that Food Safety Training Certification Courses are available through the Porcupine Health Unit.
Why become a certified food handler?
The goal of this course is to provide food premises operators, owners and staff with the basic knowledge to identify risk factors associated with food-borne illness and the skills necessary to handle food in a manner that will prevent a food-borne illness from occurring.
Who should attend a Food Safety Training Certification Course?
The certified food hander course is beneficial to anyone involved in food handling in the food service industry, especially owners, operators and staff of food premises. If you already are a certified food handler and it has been five years or more, we encourage you to recertify.
Course Description
The course is taught by Certified Public Health Inspectors and an exam is held at the end of the class. Upon successful completion of the exam, the participant will be recognized as a "certified food handler" under the Ministry of Health Food Handler Training Protocol.

- Public Health Legislation

How do I register for a Food Safety Training Certification Course?
You may participate in the certified food handler course by enrolling for the classroom sessions, or by registering for the In Good Hands online self-paced course offered at www.ingoodhands.ca. Taking an online course requires that you contact the health unit to write the final exam.
Registration for any course or to write the exam is on a first come, first served basis. A registration fee of $50.00 per registrant, or $30.00 for the third and additional registrant from the same facility, for the same session is required and must be submitted to the Porcupine Health Unit.
Cancellations and Refunds
The health unit reserves the right to cancel a session if there is insufficient enrollment (in which case the participant will have a choice to attend a course at a later date or 100% refund).
