6) Program Manager Reports

Nutrition Services and Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention

Focus on a Healthy Weight - Betty Ann Horbul, Manager of Nutrition Services/Dental Services/Preschool Speech & Language and Joëlle Aubin, Manager of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention

In Joëlle’s absence, Betty Ann spoke to their joint written report, Focus on Health Weight, noting that risk factors for chronic disease and for obesity include genetics, poor diet, obesity, physical inactivity and alcohol misuse. Obesity becomes a chronic disease when it plays a role in disease. The focus needs to be on behaviours of healthy eating and physical activity, as people of normal weight with poor habits can be unhealthy, and those overweight and obese with good habits can be healthy.

Public Health Ontario and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences reported that we could gain seven more years in life expectancy and have a better quality of life by living healthier lives. They looked at the burden of smoking, unhealthy alcohol consumption, poor diet, physical inactivity, and high stress, and their impact on life expectancy in Ontario. Behaviour change is possible when individuals have strong intentions, no barriers that make it impossible to change, and the skills to make the change.

We have built capacity to meet the gaps in our area with strategies such as Motivational Interviewing. We have trained public health nurses, dietitians, and health promoters who deliver programs and sessions in all communities. We continue to work with community partners to enhance the built environment to support healthy choices. Our goal is to make healthy choice the easier and possible choice.
