Thunder Bay District Health Unit

Re: Community Evacuation Resources Northwestern Ontario:  “Thunder Bay District Board of Health Resolution 50-2015"

Copy of letter, dated April 10th, to Premier Wynne, advising of their Board’s resolution, asking the government of Ontario to reconvene the Joint Emergency Management Steering Committee (JEMS) for the purpose of reviewing the performance of the Ontario Mass Evacuation Plans (OMEP) for the Far North, and that the request proposal from municipal partners for the establishment and maintenance of permanent resources with respect to the evacuation of First Nation Communities during emergency situations.

Letter, dated April 13th, from Dr. David Williams requesting support for their Resolution #50-2015.

Northwestern Health Unit

Re: Bill 45, Making Healthier Choices Act

Letter, dated May 5th, to Premier Wynne, advising of their Board’s resolution, urging the provincial government to amend Bill 45, to include sodium labelling, and to allow for municipal bylaws to address additional nutrition information beyond sodium and calories to assist consumers to make informed and healthier food choices.

Peterborough County-City Health Unit

Re: Continued support for the implementation of Canada’s National Alcohol Strategy

Letter, dated May 7th, to Prime Minister Harper and Minister Ambrose, expressing appreciation for their commitment to the prevention of harms caused by the use and misuse of alcohol and to encourage continued and enhanced support; and urging them to support the work of the National Alcohol Strategy Advisory Committee (NASAC) through a collaborative, multi-faceted and long-term approach that is based on evidence informed policies and practices, through continued and augmented financial support.

Sudbury and District Health Unit

Re: Increasing Alcohol Availability in Ontario

Letter, dated May 11th, to Premiere Wynne, advising of their Board’s resolution endorsing alPHa’s correspondence to Government Ministers and Premier, with regard to their serious concerns regarding the proposal for the increased availability of alcohol through VQA wine in Farmers’ Markets, LCBO Express Kiosks, and the privatization of the sale of beverage alcohol through initiatives such as local supermarkets; and strongly recommend the Province undertake a detailed analysis of the health and social impacts, including direct and indirect costs related to the proposed changes to Ontario’s beverage alcohol retailing system.

6) Program Manager Reports

Reproductive and Child Health - Breastfeeding

Chantal Riopel, Manager of Healthy Babies Healthy Children/Chief Nursing Officer

Chantal Riopel, Program Manager, spoke to her written report, noting the breastfeeding rates in our district, the programs and services in place to support breastfeeding and reviewed the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) designation requirements.

Dental Services

Betty Ann Horbul, Manager of Nutrition Services/Dental Services/Preschool Speech and Language

Betty Ann Horbul, Program Manager, spoke to her written report on Dental Services, reviewing the School Dental Health Survey results; prevalence of caries free clients who received fluoride varnish over the 5 years 2007/08 to 2011/12; the rate of emergency room visits and day surgery use for oral health conditions by age group (PHU and Ontario 2012); and the percent of carries free 5 year olds in 2005/2006 versus 2013/2014.

7) Program Committee Report

a) Infectious Diseases - Chantal Porter, Program Coordinator

Laurier Duciaume thanked Chantal Porter for providing an informative presentation on the Porcupine Health Unit’s Infectious Diseases Program.

b) alPHa Resolutions for Consideration – 2015 Annual Conference

a) Board Meeting Dates

Board Chair, Steve Black, has raised a concern regarding Friday Board meetings, requesting we survey our Board members to see if another day of the week would be feasible.

After further discussion, it was determined that Friday meetings work best for the majority of our Board members.
