Steps to Wellness: A Seminar on Mood and Wellbeing During and After Pregnancy

Timmins, Ontario—Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Mother’s mental health is the focus of Steps to Wellness, a workshop hosted by the Porcupine Health Unit. The event, held in partnership with the Ontario Early Years Centre, will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2017, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Porcupine Health Unit, located at 169 Pine Street South in Timmins.

“We’re inviting all new or expecting mothers and their families to attend this workshop to learn about Postpartum Mood Disorders, which include depression, anxiety and the baby blues,” states Meagan Potvin, a Public Health Nurse with the Growing Healthy Families program at the health unit. She explains that the disorder can affect any woman within the first year of giving birth.

The Best Start Resource Centre claims that four out of five women will experience mood changes after having a baby. When left untreated, postpartum mood disorders can get worse, and affect the wellness of a mother and her baby.

“We hope women and their families will come learn about the warning signs of postpartum mood disorders and when to seek extra help,” says Potvin. “Parenthood is a huge adjustment for both parents. This workshop will help parents feel more supported in our community”.

The free workshop is open to everyone, however registration in advance is required. Workshop information may be accessed through the health unit website at www.porcupinehu.on.ca or by calling 705-267-1181.
