As of January 1, 2017, all food-service chains with 20 or more locations in Ontario must post the number of calories in the food and drink items they sell. This is part of the Healthy Menu Choices Act, 2015.
Many Canadians go to restaurants, get take-out or stop for a treat on a regular basis. We know that eating out is associated with a higher calorie consumption and weight gain. Menu labelling can help consumers make informed choices and discuss healthy options. It may also give restaurants added incentives to cook with more nutritious ingredients that are lower in calories, or use healthier methods of cooking.
We need calories every day to fuel our basic body functions and physical activity. We eat and drink to get this energy, which is measured in calories. While it is important to consider calories, they aren’t the most important aspect of our foods. An example would be avocadoes and fries: both servings could be equal in calories, but an avocado is high in healthy, unsaturated fat compared to fries that are high in saturated fat – the bad type. It’s always important to consider food as a whole, how it’s prepared, and also watch the size of our portions.
