What is Multi-Unit Housing?

Multi-unit housing (MUH) is any shared residences such as:

  • condominiums
  • apartment buildings
  • duplexes
  • town-homes
  • post-secondary residence buildings

Importance of Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing (MUH)

Under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, smoking is illegal in the common areas of multi-unit housing (e.g., elevators, stairwells, hallways, parking garages, laundry facilities and lobbies). Despite 80% of tenants wanting to live in a smoke-free building, approximately 1 in 5 Ontarians are exposed to unwanted second-hand smoke, due to shared walls, hallways, electrical and ventilation systems.

There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, and it can cause immediate damage to your health. It can lead to a number of diseases, including cancer and heart disease.
