Invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) has increased across the province and there have been several media releases from a few health units announcing outbreaks.  While the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) is not at that point, the increase in our communities is still concerning and an information letter has been sent to health care providers and those working with vulnerable populations to increase awareness. We continue to meet with other Northern Health Units and Public Health Ontario to monitor the situation.

Dr. Catton and Don West attended the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Public Health Summit on November 16th in Toronto.  Dr. Catton was the Medical Officer of Health representative on a Panel discussion regarding change management for the PHU with respect to planning for the new standards. The panel also consisted of a Manager, Board Member and Chief Executive Officer from various health units.

Today, was the PHU Annual Christmas Conference and the day was dedicated to staff engagement for strategic planning.  Staff participated in three activities looking at vision statements and questions regarding strategic direction going forward.
