Elgin St. Thomas Public Health

Re: Requesting Support for Enhancement of Legislation under the HPPA to Allow for the Inspection and Enforcement Activities of Personal Service Settings

Copy of letter, dated June 5th, to Minister Hoskins, supporting the position of Wellington Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, recommending enactment of legislation that increases the enforcement abilities of public health staff and provides incentives for operations to comply with infection prevention and control best practices.

Sudbury & District Health Unit

Re: The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act (Bill 148)

Copy of letter, dated June 30th, to Premier Wynne, advising of their Board’s resolution #37/17/06, commending the provincial government’s Changing Workplaces Review of 2015-16 and introduction of Bill 14; and supporting the proposed changes to the Employment Standards Act.

North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit

Re: The Revealing of Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd.'s Anti-Contraband Campaign

Copy of letter, dated July 6th, to Minister Hoskins, advising of their Board’s resolution #BOH/2017/06/11, noting that any communication from the tobacco industry will be forwarded to the
Medical Officer of Health; and that they commend the Ontario Ministry of Finance for raising tobacco excise taxes in the recent budget, and encourages this Ministry to enhance enforcement activities designed to reduce the presence of contraband tobacco in Ontario communities.

Middlesex-London Health Unit

Re: Support of Low Income Adult Dental Program in Ontario

Copy of letter, dated August 8th, to Minister Hoskins, endorsing Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Heath Unit’s correspondence, dated June 7th, requesting a commitment to a sustainable dental program that appropriately addresses the dental problems of those in need to deliver better value for the people and the Province by redirecting funds currently spent in emergency rooms and physicians’ offices to preventive care and dental treatment.

6) Medical Officer of Health and Program Manager Reports

Meeting with Downtown Timmins Business Improvement Area (BIA)

Dr. Catton and Don West met with the Downtown Timmins BIA Board of Directors on August 21st with regard to the proposed move of the Porcupine Health Unit head office, and the BIA’s continued partnership with the Porcupine Health Unit, and possible timelines for the move.

Family Health

Child Health - Positive Parenting - Chantal Riopel, Manager of Family Health

Chantal Riopel provided a summary of her report to the Board on prenatal education. The report outlined the requirements for prenatal education in the Ontario Public Health Standards for the
Reproductive Health Program to promote healthy pregnancies, healthy birth outcomes, and preparation for parenthood. Chantal also noted the need for, and the benefits of, prenatal
education, which includes increased knowledge about pregnancy and childbirth, promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours, increased initiation of breastfeeding and improved maternal mental health. Prenatal education programs and services offered by the Porcupine Health Unit throughout the District for pregnant women and their support person were also noted.

Infectious Diseases and Clinical Services

Immunization and Harm Reduction Program - Lynn Leggett, Manager of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Services

Lynn Leggett spoke to her written report noting the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care’s announcements regarding changes to the Immunization of School Pupils Act, the school based
HPV Program and the enhancements to the Harm Reduction Program.

7) Program Committee Report

a) Partnerships with EMS to Prevent Falls in Seniors - Patrick Nowak and Valérie Genier

Sue Perras thanked Patrick and Valérie for providing an informative presentation regarding partnerships with Emergency Medical Services to prevent falls in Seniors.

b) Branch Office Services Review - Lynn Leggett, Program Manager

Sue Perras thanked Lynn Leggett for providing an update to the Program Committee on the review of branch office services.

8) Resource Committee Report

The Committee reviewed the Report of the Expert Panel on Public Health and the Board directed Management to prepare a resolution, reflecting the health unit’s concerns, for consideration at the next Board meeting.
