Full Vaccination is Key to Preventing Spread and Avoiding a Fourth Wave with the Delta Variant in Porcupine Health Unit Region.

Timmins, Ontario — Thursday, August 5, 2021

Dr. Lianne Catton, Medical Officer of Health for the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU), announced “I am very pleased with the turnout we’ve had at our vaccination sites thus far. At least 90% of our adults aged 70 years and older have now been fully vaccinated, which is astounding. My plea today is for all eligible community members to seek reliable sources of information and go out and get a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.”

“If you have not received your two doses, book an appointment or visit a drop-in clinic to receive either your first or second dose,” Dr. Catton urged. “The more transmissible and dangerous COVID-19 Delta variant is currently in our area, and we have seen 50 Delta cases so far. With the Delta variant, there is evidence of less protection against symptomatic disease after one dose, meaning it is important for everyone who is eligible to receive both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

To reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 and best protect against the Delta variant, the Ontario Chief Medical Officer has advised that the province is aiming for an ambitious, but achievable target of 90% of Ontarians vaccinated with a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 85% of the population becoming fully vaccinated (receiving two doses).

To move beyond Step 3 of the Ministry’s Roadmap to Reopen, and enjoy a further reduction in restrictions, the targets are set at 80% of the eligible population aged 12 and over with one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 75% have receiving their second, with no public health unit having less than 70% of their eligible population aged 12 and over fully vaccinated. While these targets have been set to move beyond Step 3, it is important to recognize to better protect against the Delta variant and avoid a 4th wave of this pandemic in our area, 85% of our population should be fully vaccinated with two COVID-19 doses.

Additional benefits to full vaccination may include decreased disruption in schools and workplaces.

Our vaccine rates are increasing but we need to get more vaccines in arms.  As of August 3, 2021, 77.6% of PHU residents aged 12 years and older have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 66.4% are fully vaccinated with 2 doses.
