COVID-19 Outbreak Declared at a School in the Porcupine Health Unit Area

Issued: Sunday November 21, 2021

The Porcupine Health Unit is announcing that a COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Pope Francis Elementary School in Timmins. The PHU is working closely with the school and the Catholic District School Board to ensure ongoing measures are maintained to protect students and staff.

Affected cohorts have been given guidance for monitoring, isolation and testing as appropriate. The health unit will continue to provide infection prevention and control assessment at the school to support the implementation of enhanced public health measures

The PHU reminds all parents, students and staff in schools to complete daily symptom screening and testing when ill. Use the COVID-19 School and Childcare Screening Tool every morning to check for symptoms, regardless of vaccination status and remember, the sniffles, fever or cough may not just be a cold or the flu: COVID-19 school screening (

We all play a role in keeping kids in school. Preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the community directly supports reducing the risk in schools. Continue to follow public health measures:

  • get your COVID-19 vaccine if you are eligible;
  • wear your mask properly;
  • wash your hands well; and
  • stay home and get tested if you have any symptoms, even if they are mild.
