6. Medical Officer of Health Report

Dr. Lianne Catton, Medical Officer of Health, provided an update with regard to Porcupine Health Unit programs and services, including our ongoing extraordinary efforts with respect to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

7. Correspondence

Dr. Lianne Catton, spoke to the following correspondence:

Grey Bruce Health Unit

Re: Ontario Health reporting inaccuracy COVID-19 Enhanced Surveillance of Long-Term Care

  • Copy of letter, dated June 8th, to Bruce Lauckner, CEO for Erie St. Clair, Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant, South West and Waterloo Wellington LHINs, requesting a written response, confirming and outlining that the data inaccuracy was appropriately reported to the Premier’s Office and the correction was completed; and that mitigation measures have been implemented to prevent such inaccuracy from occurring in the future.

Re: Basic Income for Income Security during COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

  • Copy of letter, dated June 9th, to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Deputy Minister Chrystia Freeland, and Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, endorsing Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s call for the federal government to ‘take swift and immediate action on the evolution of the CERB Benefit into legislation for a basic income as an effective long-term response to the problems of income insecurity, persistent poverty and household food insecurity, as well as a response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic’.

Mickey Auger thanked Dr. Catton for providing an update with regard to COVID-19.

b) Basic Income for Income Security during COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

THAT the Board of Health write to the Prime Minister of Canada recommending the evolution of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) into a basic income for all Canadians, during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

AND FURTHERMORE THAT the Board of Health endorse the letters of both the Ontario Dietitians in Public Health, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, Timiskaming Health Unit and Canada’s Senate calling on the federal government to implement a basic income for all Canadians to address household food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

AND FURTHERMORE, THAT the Premier of Ontario, MP Charlie Angus and MPP Gilles Bisson and municipal councils, the Association of Local Public Health Agencies, the Ontario Public Health Association, and the Boards of Health in Ontario receive a copy of the Board’s letter.

Mickey Auger thanked Dr. Catton for providing an update, advising that the Public Health Modernization Consultation Response and Session continues to be postponed, due to COVID-19, and that further information will be provided, once received.

a) COVID-19 Briefing/Webinar – Update – Sue Perras

Sue Perras provided a brief update with regard to the COVID-19 Briefing/Webinar she attended on June 19th.  Dr. David Williams, CMOH, hosted the meeting and was joined by Dr. David McKeown, Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Elizabeth Walker and Brent Feeney.
