Control of Infections at Long-Term Care Facilities

Residents of long-term care facilities tend to be a high risk, vulnerable population to illness due to weakened immune systems and other health conditions. As a result, each long-term care facility has an infection control coordinator and a committee to oversee infection control measures to prevent and limit the spread of disease. The Porcupine Health Unit attends meetings at these facilities and works closely with staff to control the spread of disease and minimize risk to patients, staff, and visitors.

During outbreaks, the facility has to put certain control measures in place to prevent the spread of infections to their residents. Resources have been developed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to control respiratory and gastroenteritis outbreaks. Ensure that all precautions are followed when visiting loved ones at these facilities.
